Which Surfboard To Choose Based On Conditions

Use the swell height, period and wind from the surf forecast Madeira above as a quick guide to choose the right board before booking:

Small, gentle waves (up to 0.5 m): soft-top or mini malibu — more floatation and easier paddling and wave catching.

Medium waves (0.5–1.2 m) with a short period: fish or hybrid — good volume with manoeuvrability in choppier seas.

Bigger waves with a longer period: shortboard or groveler — more control and responsiveness in more powerful waves.

Strong or onshore wind: choose a board with more volume, more stable and easier to paddle in choppy conditions.

At more exposed, rocky-bottom spots like Jardim do Mar or Paúl do Mar, waves tend to pick up more power than at more sheltered beaches like Machico, Porto da Cruz ,Seixal or Sao Vicente— so, for the same swell reading, it may be worth choosing a board with more volume at the more protected spots.
